| The Neurosciences Institute was established in 1981 by Nobel Laureate Gerald M. Edelman, M.D., Ph.D., the current director. The Institute is unique in that it is supported entirely by private donations, intentionally small, group-oriented, interdisciplinary; and engaged in both theoretical and experimental neurobiology. Institute scientists have been responsible for many important discoveries involving consciousness, sleep, perception, music, memory, movement, behavior, and speech.
