New Jersey Division of Codes and Standards
Cynthia A. Wilk has been the Director of the Division of Codes and Standards since July, 2007 and has been with the Department of Community Affairs since 1974. The Division is New Jersey’s state code enforcement agency and implements and oversees the enforcement of a Statewide Uniform Construction Code in New Jersey including building, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, mechanical, barrier free and rehabilitation subcodes. In addition, the Division is responsible for enforcement of the Liquid Propane Gas regulations as well as the state multifamily housing code, licensing of all rooming and boarding houses, administration of New Jersey’s New Home Warranty program, the review of all condominium and cooperative sales offerings, administration of many of New Jersey’s landlord tenant laws and enforcement of the carnival and amusement ride regulations.
Ms. Wilk has served as the State delegate to the National Conference of States on Building Codes and Standards since 1996 and has been President of the organization since 2002. She was a member of the Board of Visitors of the National Fire Academy in FEMA from 1991 to 2002, serving as Vice Chair 1994-1996 and Chair 1996-2002. In 1999, Ms. Wilk was appointed by FEMA Director James Lee Witt to serve on the Panel to revisit the America Burning Report resulting in the report America at Risk. Ms. Wilk serves on several State committees including the New Jersey Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health Advisory Board, the State Emergency Response Commission and the Domestic Security Preparedness Planning group. She is also chairperson of the Carnival and Amusement Ride Safety Advisory Board.
Ms. Wilk is an attorney admitted to practice in the State of New Jersey. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Bucknell University and holds a law degree from Rutgers University.
