| Founded in 1983, the Island Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the islands and communities of the Gulf of Maine through programs in community development, marine resource management, and education. The Institute has an annual operating budget of $2.5 million and a membership base of 4,200. It is located in the coastal city of Rockland in midcoast Maine, about 80 miles northeast of Portland.
