The mission of KAI Pharmaceuticals is to discover and develop compounds that inhibit or up-regulate a family of enzyems called protein kinase C (PKC). Targeting PKC holds many therapeutic opportunities because of the diverse functions of PKC in biology. The initial two indications that will be pursued by the company are amelioration of reperfusion injury and mediation of pre-conditioning, both in the cardiovascular system and the CNS. Preclinical experiments have already demonstrated a significant reduction of tissue damage post myocardial infarction.
