Since the establishment of the disk drive industry, almost 50 years ago, head and media technologies have evolved continually to enable a multi-million-fold increase in areal density. Huge capital investments are made by storage OEMs to drive such progress. The areal density in HDD devices continues to grow exponentially, doubling almost every 18 months.
